Tahoe Rim Trail: Hike it all at once   Leave a comment

By Tim Hauserman

The Tahoe Rim Trail is a 170 mile trail that circles Lake Tahoe. It passes mountain lakes, crosses high alpine passes, and runs for miles through deep forests of red fir, hemlock and majestic white pine…but most importantly, it gives you miles and miles of opportunities to gaze down into our favorite big patch of blue.

The trail is divided into eight sections of between 15 and 32 miles. These bite sized chunks give TRT hikers and mountain bikers, regardless of their physical condition, a chance to enjoy the trail. But have you ever thought of becoming one of the few who have thru-hiked the Tahoe Rim Trail? Here’s a few reasons why you should:

-The trail circles the entire lake. Which means that if you hike it all you can start out in one place and about two weeks later end up right where you began. What is especially cool about this is that for much of the journey you can gaze across the lake at where you have been, while also envisioning where you will soon be.
-If you join one of the annual thru-hikes put on by the Tahoe Rim Trail Association, someone else will handle much of the logistics and provide you with food and water at key points. You will also have a group of companions that are sure to become great friends, and you will be supporting the TRTA in it’s mission to maintain the Tahoe Rim Trail. For information go to http://www.tahoerimtrail.org
-Make no mistake about it. Thru-hiking the TRT is not easy. It’s a tough, bucket list challenge…but it is one that normal humans who hike about 13 miles a day can do in two weeks, as opposed to hiking twenty grueling miles every day for four and half straight months to conquer the Pacific Crest Trail.
-When you finish, you will have the pride of becoming one of the heralded members of the Tahoe Rim Trail 165 mile Club, and obtain a number. Mine is #11.

Need more information? Pick up a copy of my official guidebook to the Tahoe Rim Trail, now in it’s 3rd edition. Its’ available at local bookstores and outdoor shops.

Your Tahoe-Truckee Top Five for 2014.   Leave a comment

Yes, it’s that time of year again. When we take stock of 2013, and make plans for the steps we want to take in 2014. Let’s not call them resolutions, because we know those usually don’t work. What if instead, we just look at doing a few things in 2014 that will make us feel good, while maybe doing good for the community as well:

1) Find a local organization to support: While giving is an important part of what makes the winter holidays special, how about continuing that spirit of giving all year round? In fact the organizations that do good around these parts probably need our help even more once the soft glow of Christmas giving has flittered away. Whether it’s a financial donation or a gift of your time, it will be greatly appreciated and will brighten up the lives of those in need.  Hands on Tahoe is a wonderful organization that connects volunteers to the community.

2) Try a new sport: Have you paddleboarded, kayaked, road biked, cross-country skied or snowshoed? Or thought about trying something a little more daring like snow kiting or rock climbing? The Sierra is loaded with different ways to enjoy what nature has given us, and there are lots of folks who can rent you the equipment and teach you how to do your new sport right. Who knows, perhaps it will become your new favorite.

3) Find a new trail: If you’ve hiked or biked much of the Tahoe Rim Trail or the Donner Lake Rim Trail, how about finding a new and different trail to explore. There is nothing quite as cool as that first time on a lovely ribbon of single track.

4) Seek out a new business. There are many small businesses that show off the work of local artists, or put out a delicious cup of joe. Go out there and experience something new. In the process you will help a few Tahoe/Truckee folks bring in some money, which they will then turn around and spend to support other businesses and our little towns.

5) Still want to make a resolution to lose ten pounds? What if instead you call it a “get outside every day and do something active in our beautiful place” resolution? It’s amazing how being outside in the wilderness where there are no refrigerators just makes the pounds drop off.

Wishing all of you and yours a happy and safe holiday!

The ski areas are open, and although all their runs may not be (due to uncooperative Mother Nature) the resorts have all been snowing up a storm via snow making equipment. By all accounts, the skiing has been pretty good. (I have spies at the ski areas who keep me informed! I also hear that The Great Basin Carolers will be wandering Squaw Valley with their holiday tunes on Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas. Grab a hot drink at one of the many eating and drinking establishments and go have a listen…)

Not into cruising down the mountain? The ice rinks at Squaw Valley, Truckee and Northstar are all open as well. Or maybe a Christmas snowshoe or cross country ski trek is in order. What better way to work off all of those calories you just KNOW you will be consuming?

Congratulate yourself on getting outside, breathing some fresh air and getting some exercise.

Go ahead. Have another piece of pie!
