It might seem a cliché to say that it is better to give then to receive. After all, most of us remember fondly that childhood Christmas when were obsessed with getting the perfect gift, like we were Ralphie in “The Christmas Story.” But when you grow up (or at least get older, those of us who live in paradise try to never grow up) you find the true warm and fuzzies of Christmas really do come from giving. I find my true spirit of Christmas comes from giving my time to the Truckee Community Christmas. This wonderful group of volunteers coordinates the distribution of food, toys and warm coats to families in need during the holidays in theTruckee area.
When I started with Truckee Community Christmas, I thought I would spend a little time over the holidays helping out, but it has turned out to be a much bigger part of my life. About 5 years ago I became the food coordinator for Truckee Community Christmas. Every year at the beginning of December, I do my part by organizing volunteers. We collect food and accept monetary donations throughout town. Then the Soroptomist’s of Truckee coordinates wrapping the toys and dividing them into boxes for each family. On December 17th they were delivered to almost 350 local families. It’s hard work at a busy time of year, but the ever growing group of volunteers is rewarded with warm hearts, because they know they are not just giving stuff, they are giving full bellies and goofy smiles to families in need.
This holiday season’s distribution has come and gone, but if you want to experience the rewards of giving next year, please contact me and I can give you the opportunity to be part of it. Don’t worry, you only need to contribute what you are willing or able to.
