The Global Cafe. Order at the counter and your food will be up in a jiffy!

Located across the street from the Tahoe Vista Boat Ramp and Beach, the new Global Cafe is an old building that has been completely remodeled and revamped from its previous life as a Mexican ‘to go’ taqueria.  While I just loved those little tacos with cilantro, onion and lime, this little cafe is a much needed improvement.

Having lived at Tahoe Vista some time ago, I always lamented that there was no place nearby to just walk over and get a latte or breakfast without hopping in my car. With so many vacation hotels, motels and condos in the area in addition to the year round neighborhoods, it was something that was sorely missing.

Well, lament no more! The Global Cafe serves everything from breakfast, to lunch to an early dinner.

On recommendation from the gals running the front end, I had the breakfast burrito with sausage. Not only was it extremely tasty, but it was HUGE! Not being a ravenous, 6 foot, muscle bound buff male ready to conquer some hill, I easily made 4 meals out of it. (Hint: ask for a to go box when you order as you will most likely be taking some of it home.  Or better still, bring your own bag for the leftovers).

And goodness knows, you can’t beat the view! You can sit at the window and gaze out at beautiful Lake Tahoe while having your coffee and reading the paper, or pack it all up and head across the street and dine at the beach. Park it at one of the picnic tables or bring your towel and beach chair along and eat at the waters edge.

In addition to their eclectic breakfast selections, they also serve soups and salads, burgers (both vegetarian and regular), sandwiches and flat bread pizzas. Made with the freshest ingredients, while the food is made fast, this certainly is no fast food joint.

Stateline Lookout: What a difference a year makes   Leave a comment

In the fall of 2015, I made the short journey to the Stateline Lookout above Crystal Bay. It’s a fairly short hike that rewards you with spectacular views of Lake Tahoe, from two very different perspectives: One towards the south and east over Incline Village, and the other straight towards Kings Beach. I made the trek again this week, and was rewarded not only with those jaw dropping views, but also the stark evidence of how water has poured into Lake Tahoe during this monumental winter.

Check out these photos taken from the exact same spot: The rock patio area where the actual fire lookout used to stand. The first in the fall of 2015 depicts a wide, glorious beach in front of Kings Beach, and the second, taken on March 18th, shows the swath of sand has almost disappeared under Tahoe’s sparkling waters.

The other difference with the hike this time, was that it was mostly on snow. In the summer a paved single land road (blocked for public traffic) leads up to the top, where several paved hiking paths take off. This time, the first half of the route was down to pavement, as the road is plowed to the water tank just above the route. From there, you are walking over several feet of snow. The day we hiked, was after a week of warmness so the main route had been nicely packed down by a steady supply of visitors. Once we headed off the trail, to check out the views from the edge of the ridge, we ventured into “post-hole” land: where every step you hoped you would stay afloat and not drop down a foot, once my foot dropped about two feet.

Given the winter we’ve had, it is pretty nice to give your feet a chance to ramble, and with this short climb, you are rewarded with two amazing views. Enjoy.

Where to begin:
Take the first left off of Highway 28 on the Incline Village side of the North Shore casinos at Reservoir Road. In a short distance, turn right on Lakeview (where you will see a sign that says Lookout). Take a left at the first “Y”, then at the next “Y” your trail begins behind the gate on the left. It’s a residential area with just a few parking spaces, so try to go on a weekday. You could also park at the The Biltmore and walk up the road, which would add a pleasant mile to the hike.

Alternative 2 proposal for re – development of the West River Street property

.

By Michelle Portesi

As most everyone knows, the Town of Truckee during recent years has been working diligently to upgrade infrastructure and develop public use projects. We’ve written here quite a bit about these projects, including:

The Mini Mouse Hole on Highway 89 (mostly completed) yourfriendinhighplaces.net/2016/09/15/truckees-mini-mousehole/

The Legacy Trail – yourfriendinhighplaces.net/2014/09/25/legacy-trail-connects-downtown-truckee-and-glenshire/

And Brickelltown’s Makeover – yourfriendinhighplaces.net/2016/07/08/truckees-brickelltown-is-getting-a-makeover/

Last summer, a lot was accomplished in Brickelltown, with additional parking spaces, road improvements,  walkways and gathering spots added. Now The Town of Truckee is revisiting a re-development project on West River Street that had been put on the back burner when the economy hit the skids several years ago.

The area in question is a vacant lot along the Truckee River. Present proposals include a public plaza with river access and possible restaurant building. This would certainly be a much desired addition to Downtown Truckee, creating a much more centralized gathering place for the community adjacent to retail and dining. You can read more about the proposals in the Sierra Sun.

To participate or just stay informed, you can also keep up on any scheduled community workshops on this project on this Town of Truckee’s page and any progress on the project on this page. www.townoftruckee.com/government/town-manager/economic-development/west-river-site-project
