This Sunday April 23rd is the Billy Dutton Uphill. It is tougher then it looks, and it looks pretty damn tough. The event climbs up the Mountain Run at Squaw Valley. It’s just around five kilometers to the top, a piece of cake for a cross country skier or runner right? Well, wrong, because it’s 2000 feet of climbing. It’s hard, but it’s also spectacularly beautiful to ski the Squaw terrain in the early morning, enjoy an awesome party at the top with an always cool group of local folks, and then enjoy the view from the tram as you head back down the hill. Or you can be one of the truly adventurous and join a few crazies who ski back down the hill on their skinnies.
The race is run in memory of Billy Dutton, one of the founders of the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue. He was a Squaw Valley kid who used to like to ski up the mountain on his classic skis before succumbing to cancer several decades ago. Members of his family join the event every year.
The Billy Dutton attracts cross country skiers, and snowshoers/runners and has different prize categories for each. A few runners have come close to winning the event every year, and are often in the lead until the several hundred yard downhill just before the finish. The Billy Dutton is a fundraiser for Far West Nordic’s Junior program. The party at High Camp includes an excellent silent auction and raffle prizes, as well as music and food and a chance to catch your breath while enjoying the amazing view.
Every skier or runner should try the Billy Dutton at least once. I’ve done it about five times, even though every time I do it I wonder why I’m doing this to myself once again. The trick of course is to ski slow and steady, which has never been my strong suit. I go way too fast out of the gate, followed by leaning over my poles gasping for breath. Whatever your technique, it’s a true iconic Tahoe event that should definitely be on every cross country skier or runners bucket list.

Every Christmas season for over 25 years, the non-profit Truckee Community Christmas has brought a shining light of joy to hundreds of families in the Truckee area. Last year about 350 families were aided by the non-profit program which provides food, clothing and toys to those who have been identified as truly needy residents of the area. Each family receives a wrapped toy for each child, a large box of food stables, a grocery store gift card, books and warm coats.
“I have been the food coordinator for the past nine years and know this program makes a big difference in people’s lives,” said Lynn Richardson. “Program families must apply and be accepted and so we know who these families are. I have met some wonderful people in Truckee who are part of my volunteer team and I couldn’t do all the organizing without them. It’s a crazy time of year to juggle this commitment, but it’s so worthwhile and you know you are helping others less fortunate in Truckee,” said Richardson.

An army of volunteers is currently collecting food, toys and warm coats.
Food Drive – Barrels are in schools and local businesses in town and at Save Mart and Safeway. Please consider buying extra food in the market and dropping it in the barrel, or contact Lynn Richardson, food coordinator, to volunteer. Her email is lynn.richardson@camoves.com.
Toy Drive – New and unwrapped toys are collected and then wrapped. Barrels have been placed to collect the toys throughout town. If you would like to volunteer please contact Lynette Powell. Her email is lynette.powell@sbcglobal.net
Coat Drive – Coats are being collected at various locations in town and at the Church of the Mountains in Downtown Truckee.

The collection of food, toys and coats must end by December 14, so the goods can be delivered before Christmas, so now is the time to make your contribution.

Even as I write this, the wind is whipping and light precipitation comes and goes as the area tries to decide what season we’re in. While the leaves have just turned in all of Fall’s glory, I’m really hoping these force 10 winds won’t blow them off the trees just yet. That being said, it is obvious that winter will soon be blustering its way into the area and reminding us to get our gear in order.
Ski Swaps are great for that, especially for those with families. It’s no secret that ski equipment is pricey stuff and kids grow out of it all too quickly. For more advanced skiers, it’s a chance to upgrade equipment without spending ‘beaucoup dinero’ for brand spanking new items at the ski shops.

* Ski Swap Season kicks off this weekend at the North Lake Tahoe Ski Swap and Homewood Pumpkin Festival. The event has new owners and has changed its venue to Homewood Mountain Resort. There will also be a raffle and bake sale with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the North Tahoe PTO, supporting their youth programs.
