Wooden boats and rubber rafts = summertime fun.   Leave a comment

While the Olympics are spectacular, this is summer in the Sierra. Set the DVR and get thee down to the water.  Here are two good options:

Concours d,Elegance.

Wooden boat. Just the words evoke warm memories of long ago summer evenings on Lake Tahoe. Fortunately, the tradition of wooden boats can still be found at the 40th Annual Concours d’Elegance, August 10th and 11th at Sierra Boat Company in Carnelian Bay. Nearly one hundred of North America’s best loved and best maintained wooden boats will be on display at the show. This year’s marque class will be the Italian built Riva Aquarama. With over 30 Riva’s at the show it will be the largest collection of Riva’s ever to appear together in North America. In addition to providing an opportunity to see these beautiful marvels of mahogony, the Concours d’Elegance is also an occasion for a variety of social events including an opening night gala, awards BBQs, and luncheons. Check out all the details at: www.laketahoeconcours.com or call 775-851-4444 Show Times: Friday, August 10th from 10-4:30 and Saturday August 11th from 9-4 PM. Tickets purchased in advance are $25 for one day, $35 for two-days if paid in advance, $30 and $40 if purchased the day of the show.

Rafting down the Truckee.

Heading down the Truckee River from just below Fanny Bridge to the big party at River Ranch on a raft is one of the Tahoe area’s most popular summer activities. The water is warm and inviting and the river can be whatever you want it to be: Relax and enjoy the scenery, or join your friends and party hearty. You can save a few bucks by bringing your own raft and arranging for a shuttle, or you can take advantage of Truckee River Taxi’s new shuttle service this year. For a reasonable fee rafters can catch a ride from River Ranch back to their car in Tahoe City, contact them at www.truckeerivertaxi.com or call.386-3935. Or you can let someone else take care of everything for you by renting a raft from one of the two rafting companies. I recommend recommend Truckee River Rafting, 583-1111 http://www.truckeeriverrafting.com, owned by a fellow North Tahoe High School grad, whose father started the company while I was still in high school. No matter how you get down the river, be sure and take the float, it is always a highlight of a Tahoe-Truckee summer.

Get Cultured Outdoors—it’s summertime!   Leave a comment

One of the best things about being in the mountains in the summer is that you can combine enjoying the great outdoors at it’s best and a bit of culture. Here are three favorites that you should not miss:

Shakespeare/Music on the Beach, Sand Harbor, Incline Village

Sand Harbor is just about the prettiest place around, with the whole lake unfolding past those big white granite boulders. Spending an evening there really doesn’t require anything else, but since you are there anyway, you might as well throw in a little Shakespeare to add to the fun. This year “Two Gentleman of Verona,” a comedy, will be presented between July 13-August 26th.  Verona performs Tuesday-Sunday, and on Mondays you can go to Sand Harbor and hear some music. For more info or to purchase tickets go to http://www.laketahoeshakespeare.com/.

Truckee Thursdays

Every Thursday throughout the summer downtown Truckee becomes a big party. From 5-9 pm you will find a farmers market, street faire, arts and crafts, live music from top performers, delicious food and lots of happy people getting together and enjoying the summertime.

Concerts on the Commons, Tahoe City

Bring your picnic basket, a swimsuit, and a mellow attitude to enjoy the end of your weekend at The Commons Beach in Tahoe City. Starting at 4:30 on Sunday afternoons you can join the throng grooving to a variety of great music on the grass or sand next to the beach. If you forgot the food, several vendors are there to tempt you with food and drink. Where else can you take a dip in Lake Tahoe and float off shore listening to music? All for free.Image
