Living here in the High Sierras, we’ve come to understand that ‘Spring’ as a season is a relative term. More often than not, we go from winter to summer within a week, with a few ‘teases’ of bright but brisk days that passes for spring in between March and July. A few crocus and daffodil blooms punching up through the soil and warmer temperatures soon has us salivating for long sunny days and gardens of riotous colors in bloom.
Alas, we know those lovely days probably won’t last for long until we hit the 4th of July. And those riotous colors in bloom? They’re more than likely still several more months away…
True to form, our recent snow storm proved that point all too well. We here in California need the water, so we’ll take it! But still, I look at my summer garden trying to peek up amidst the snow, and all I can think of is ‘Not yet! Not yet! You know you’re going to get frozen somewhere between now and summer!’

But before we throw off those last vestiges of this winter, it’s time to start thinking about next winter.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, and no, I don’t need my head examined…and before I hear a collective groan rise up throughout the land, realize, I’m just trying to save you some coin.
April and May is when most of the local ski areas have their deepest discounts on next years ski passes, so now is the time to buy them if you were planning on skiing next years powder days. (And let’s all hope we have more snow next year than we did this last one!)
Northstar, Heavenly and Kirkwood are now all owned by Vail, which means you can get a local pass for all three resorts. Have a bit more money and time to travel? You can get their Epic Pass that also includes access to all of their Colorado ski areas as well.
Squaw Valley and Alpine have been linked together for a few years now, but a pass for that area can now include 4 passes to Sugarbowl next winter as well. Other ski areas may be offering some sweet deals as well.

Powder Day at Squaw Valley’s last open weekend for the season
While some of us rather enjoyed the light shoveling duty and lack of the white stuff this season, deep down, we all know these warm winters and lack of snowfall hurts our local economy, impacts water storage for both California and Nevada and makes for some very dry conditions that begets forest fires. So let’s all suck it up and pray for snow – NEXT winter!
In the meantime, it’s time to enjoy another lovely, high country, spring day. Here comes the sun!

Wishing all of you and yours a happy and safe holiday!
The ski areas are open, and although all their runs may not be (due to uncooperative Mother Nature) the resorts have all been snowing up a storm via snow making equipment. By all accounts, the skiing has been pretty good. (I have spies at the ski areas who keep me informed! I also hear that The Great Basin Carolers will be wandering Squaw Valley with their holiday tunes on Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas. Grab a hot drink at one of the many eating and drinking establishments and go have a listen…)
Not into cruising down the mountain? The ice rinks at Squaw Valley, Truckee and Northstar are all open as well. Or maybe a Christmas snowshoe or cross country ski trek is in order. What better way to work off all of those calories you just KNOW you will be consuming?
Congratulate yourself on getting outside, breathing some fresh air and getting some exercise.
Go ahead. Have another piece of pie!

In the Sierra Nevada north of Lake Tahoe, between Reno and South Lake Tahoe, the old logging and railway town of Truckee has bloomed into a ski mecca, with no less than eight different ski areas within 15 miles. The first recorded ski lift in the U.S. was a Truckee steam-powered toboggan lift in 1910, and the burg still maintains much of its Old West character, with wooden walkways in its historic downtown and a still active, clapboard train station (Amtrak service twice daily). Its population of 16,180 is growing fast, but the relaxed town has managed to eschew the glitz of the larger Tahoe resort scene. This is where the locals live…

Fodor’s Travel just published a “5 Reasons to Go to Lake Tahoe this Winter”…and they are as follows:

Yes indeed, we have over a dozen ski resorts in the area, (not including the cross country skiing venues) which is impressive enough all by itself, but what we truly have over everyone else, is the views. With Lake Tahoe visible from many of the ski areas, arguably, no one can compete with our awe inspiring panoramas.

The Tahoe basin is laced with snowshoe trails and you can find you way to some incredible winter vistas in very short order. Trails range in difficulty from beginner to truly epic and most ski resorts will rent you the snowshoes and equipment you’ll need. For a mind-blowing view you can enjoy without the hike, take one of the year-round scenic tours offered by Reno Tahoe Helicopters. They offer all kinds of flights, including an hour-long sunset tour. Be sure to bring your camera.

…and speaking of Squaw Valley, the accolades for our fair area continues. Fox News and their viewers have voted Squaw Valley into the top 10 of their ‘Best Ski Resorts in North America’.
Well we can certainly see why. After combining with Alpine Meadows, they have the largest area of ski terrain in the basin, with ski runs that go from downright challenging to the beginner. Combined with the Olympic Skating Pavilion, a charming village for shopping, plenty of dining options and world class lodging, what more could you ask for?
