Every four years people question what effect the Presidential election might have on the national housing market. Let’s take a look at what is currently taking place. The New York Times ran an article earlier this week where they explained:
“A growing body of research shows that during presidential election years — particularly ones like this when there is such uncertainty about the nation’s future — industry becomes almost paralyzed. A look at the last several dozen election cycles shows that during the final year of a presidential term, big corporate investments are routinely postponed, and big deals are put on the back burner.
The research is even more persuasive on the final year of an eight-year presidential term, when a new candidate inevitably will become president.”
We are seeing this take form in the latest economic numbers. However, will this lead to a slowdown in the housing market? Not according to Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac or the National Association of Realtors.
The Impact on Housing Throughout 2016
Let’s look at what has happened and what is projected to happen by these three major entities.
“In spite of deficient supply levels, stock market volatility and the paltry economic growth seen so far this year, the housing market did show resilience and had its best first quarter of existing-sales since 2007.”
“Recent data darkened the growth outlook for the first quarter of 2016. However, despite the disappointing economic reports, we still forecast housing to maintain its momentum in 2016.”
“Consumers and businesses showed caution at the end of the first quarter…(but) Home sales are expected to pick up heading into the spring season amid the backdrop of declining mortgage rates, rising pending home sales and purchase mortgage applications, and continued easing of lending standards on residential mortgage loans.”
Bottom Line
Even during this election year, the desire to achieve the American Dream is greater than the fear of uncertainty of the next presidency.

The last couple of years have been tough on all of California. The drought hurt everyone, and our lovely Lake Tahoe went below its natural rim, causing the Truckee River to stop flowing from its mouth at Tahoe City.

That may have made for some lovely seas of lupine where they normally wouldn’t be, but we’d much rather have the water.

We had a strong winter, which was enough to fill Lake Tahoe back to its natural rim, and once again, the Truckee River is flowing from the dam in Tahoe City. Who knows, we may even see some river rafting again this year!

And we’ve got more to come. Some of the peaks around the lake are still covered in snow, and more runoff is sure to make its way to the lake and the various streams and rivers. Rain still occasionally has been making an appearance, enough to keep everything looking lush and green. Keep it coming Mother Nature!
The Truckee River is flowing briskly, as is the Yuba River on Donner Summit and many streams and waterfalls along the way. It’s time to put on some hiking shoes or break out the bike and enjoy one of our lovely spring days along the body of water of your choice.

Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon, or not at all ~ Harriet Van Horne
.
I’ve completely got the ‘entered into with abandon’ part down. In fact, I’d edit the phrase to wild abandon. I am admittedly a very messy cook. Good. But messy.
Fortunately for me, and other foodies and cooking enthusiasts, there is a veritable two story Mecca for kitchen gadgets, unique entertainment wares and various do-dads close by. Dubbed a toy store for adults, the Cooking Gallery in Old Downtown Truckee is just the place to find every conceivable culinary tool or hard to find gastronomic item. As I belong to a gourmet group, it’s my first – and usually last – go to place to find some tart pan, custard cup or ingredient required by an obscure recipe I’m cooking that can’t be found at the usual suspects (the grocery store).

Downstairs, locals and second homeowners alike, will find the most necessary of appliance and cooking needs for any kitchen. Coffee and espresso machines, Kitchenaid mixers with various attachments, sharp knives and round pie plates. Near the back are gourmet sauces, dressings, spices and specialty baking needs.
