We’ve talked about this subject before, but as pictures say a thousand words, we thought we’d show you what we’re talking about! So many folks, especially second homeowners, just want to sell and be done with it, preferably without sinking any time or money into the property to do it. To be appealing to potential buyers and to sell your home quickly, a little elbow grease and a few well spent dollars can make a world of difference. The home below sold in a matter of days!
Staging your home can take a mediocre property from ok to Wow! … and a nicer property from Wow! to Spectacular!!!

As we’ve written previously, a house with too much furniture and clutter not only is uninviting, but makes a house seem smaller than it actually is. Inversely, a house with rundown furnishings or no furnishings makes a home feel cold and unappealing as well. Buyers often have a hard time envisioning themselves living in what is currently someone else’s home. Do them (and yourself) a favor and help them see themselves in the home you are selling. There are a number of Lake Tahoe and Truckee local Interior Design businesses and retail shops that specialize in staging, often drawing from some of their showroom pieces as temporary rentals.
Think of it like choosing a restaurant. You certainly want to be there for the quality of the food, but ambiance can play a big part in your enjoyment of the meal. In fact, ambiance can turn a restaurant with OK fare into something special. And so it is with a house. Staging can make it appear better than it may actually be. Playing up your home’s strengths will help distract from some of its shortcomings.

Not only does adding accessories and little pops of color add visual interest to a drab, lifeless room, don’t negate the power of good, professional photography to bring a space to life. Note that the only thing done to the dated kitchen above is the addition of tasteful and current yellow accessories and great lighting.

After all the rain last week, spring is forecast to once again be sprung in the mountains, leading many folks to get a hankering to be out on their bike. With the morning temps still nippy and a bit of mud around, now is a perfect time to head to Verdi for a ride. Its only 20 miles east of Truckee, the grass is green, the horses and llamas are out enjoying the sunshine, and the temperature is usually 10-15 degrees warmer bringing it right into the Goldilocks zone.

Ranch outside of Verdi
Start your ride from Crystal Peak Park, just off Business 80, a short distance from Gold Ranch. The park sits next to the Truckee River and there is plenty of parking, picnic tables and restrooms. From here you have several options:
-Head east from Verdi, following the Truckee River to the edge of the Sommersett development. Here you can climb on nicely maintained bike lane through the extensive residential community enjoying views of Reno and the surrounding desert. Turn around wherever you wish and return to the bottom, where a bike path leads you east to 4th Street. Take 4th to Mayberry, then follow Mayberry for a mile, to a left turn into the Edgewater Park development. Cruise through the neighborhood to a bike path, and now follow the bike paths and roads along the Truckee past a series of riverside parks. Before you know it, you are in downtown Reno, at the Reno Whitewater Park.

-Want to add some distance? Before heading east on Business 80 from your starting point, ride South Verdi Drive to Boomtown. Cross over I-80 and circle through the lovely neighborhood to the south, adding an extra half hour of riding.
-Ready to make a day of it? Just after you turn onto Mayberry take a sharp uphill turn onto Plateau, and then wind your way all the way across Reno to the Mt. Rose Highway and back for about a 45 mile trip. Check out the link below for the Reno Area bike map, and be sure to take a copy with you on your ride. The purple line is the ride I just described.

Quick tip: Don’t forget to fill up your tank at Gold Ranch before returning to California. The gas prices are usually at least 60 cents a gallon less then Truckee.

2012 Far West Junior National Team at Soldier Hollow, Utah
The best 14-19 year old cross-country skiers in the country are coming into town March 8-14 to compete in the 2015 XC Junior Nationals at Auburn Ski Club. These racers first had to face a winter of stiff competition to qualify. Now at Junior Nationals, the best of the best may someday qualify for the Winter Olympics.
For those involved in the big family that is the Truckee-Tahoe nordic community we are stoked to see a crop of local athletes that we have known since they were little tykes have their opportunity to shine. The races will be fast paced and grueling, taking on the steep ups and downs of the Auburn Ski Club terrain.

Lynn Richardson, first volunteered for the Junior Nationals in 2000, when her kids were 4, and after being thrilled by the speed of the athletes, hoped her twins would become racers some day. By the time they were 9, and the next JN’s were here, they had already begun racing. Her daughter Skyler raced in two Junior National Races during her high school career. “I was so happy being at every race and cheering for them,” she says.
I coach 5th graders and direct the Strider Glider program at Tahoe Cross-Country Ski Area in Tahoe City. I remember some of this year’s JN competitors well: a shy Quinn Lehmkuhl in 3rd grade with a big smile on her face as she kept up with, and often passed, all the boys in her class. Or JC Schoonmaker who determinedly moved from the middle of a great pack of kids in 5th grade to the top of the heap just a few years later. And then there was Brandon Herhusky, who it seems would grow another foot taller every time you saw him.

Truckee racers – Gabi, Savannah and Skyler
They are an amazing group of athletes that have worked hard to become great uphill skiers in a community composed mostly of downhill skiers. We should all be proud of them.
