So in case you haven’t heard. The big news for folks on Donner Summit, and perhaps for the region as a whole, is that the Truckee Donner Land Trust and several other organizations are in escrow to purchase the 3000 acres where Royal Gorge Cross-Country Ski Area is located. It is not quite a done deal yet, because they have to come up with a fairly sizeable chunk of money to make this happen by mid-December, but if it does, it could have a number of big impacts on the area:
-The proposal to build over 1000 units on Donner Summit, as well as additional commercial development, and ski lifts is kaput. The land will not be developed.
-A major priority for the Truckee Donner Land Trust is to open up land that was previously posted with “No Trespassing” signs, and make it open to public access. TDLT plans on producing a trail use plan for the 3000 acres which will create an extensive new network of hiking and biking trails providing access to mountain lakes, spectacular rocky canyons and the Royal Gorge itself. Public input for this plan will be requested. The new network will not only be a major new recreational attraction for the Donner Summit area, but hopefully it will reduce the burden on the overused Pacific Crest Trail-Mt. Judah Loop trail network.
-Sugar Bowl Ski Area is in negotiations with the purchasers to operate the Royal Gorge Ski Area. With their expertise and existing equipment it is hoped they could get up and running, even with a tight time frame, this winter. Sugar Bowl is also committed to enhancing the ski area, including perhaps upgrading the facilities.

One of the best things about being in the mountains in the summer is that you can combine enjoying the great outdoors at it’s best and a bit of culture. Here are three favorites that you should not miss:
Shakespeare/Music on the Beach, Sand Harbor, Incline Village
Sand Harbor is just about the prettiest place around, with the whole lake unfolding past those big white granite boulders. Spending an evening there really doesn’t require anything else, but since you are there anyway, you might as well throw in a little Shakespeare to add to the fun. This year “Two Gentleman of Verona,” a comedy, will be presented between July 13-August 26th. Verona performs Tuesday-Sunday, and on Mondays you can go to Sand Harbor and hear some music. Truckee Thursdays
Every Thursday throughout the summer downtown Truckee becomes a big party. From 5-9 pm you will find a farmers market, street faire, arts and crafts, live music from top performers, delicious food and lots of happy people getting together and enjoying the summertime.
Concerts on the Commons, Tahoe City
Bring your picnic basket, a swimsuit, and a mellow attitude to enjoy the end of your weekend at The Commons Beach in Tahoe City. Starting at 4:30 on Sunday afternoons you can join the throng grooving to a variety of great music on the grass or sand next to the beach. If you forgot the food, several vendors are there to tempt you with food and drink. Where else can you take a dip in Lake Tahoe and float off shore listening to music? All for free.

Did you know that?
White Collar Town:
Only 17% of Truckee’s population works in “Blue Collar” occupations, with construction being by far the biggest contributor, while “White Collar” occupations such as management, business, professional and sales accounted for the remaining 83% of the work force.
It’s about 50/50:
46.8% of the housing units in Truckee are second homes, with about 49% occupied either by homeowners or renters, and the remaining few percent homes in transition or on the market for rent or sale but not occupied.
The average rent in Truckee for a three bedroom, two bath house with a two car garage is $1400-1500 per month.
Well educated:
Of the over 25 year old population in Truckee over 75% have been to college and 43.5% have obtained either a Bachelor’s Degree or higher. Only 5.5% have not obtained a high school diploma.
Average household income is $82,837 and the median income is $67,750. The median age is 38.
For the population above 15 years old. 30% have never been married, 57% are married, 2.7% are widowed and 10.3% are divorced.
Summary: In comparison to the rest of the United States, Truckee has a well educated, fairly young, fairly affluent, mostly white collar population. And I’m guessing better skiers as well.
