Starting December 1st and going through December 18, Truckee Community Christmas will be collecting food, coats and toys for financially struggling families in the area.
Look for our collection barrels throughout the community with our signature red square logo for food donations. (Safeway is always a safe bet, and they have pre-made holiday bags of food you can purchase for your donation.)
Coats will be collected by The Church of the Mountains UMC in downtown Truckee and Sierra Bible Church on Brockway Road.

This is truly a ‘Community’ Christmas, as all donations will go to local families in need. In addition, we always need and welcome local volunteers. We could use the following help:
* Collecting boxes
* Asking for donations at the stores – this is where I need the most help
* Moving food from stores and various businesses to storage – flexible times
* Sorting food
* Delivering boxes to the old middle school on December 19th

Winter is coming, and if you are in need of some winter gear, put these dates on your calendar to participate in these well known local ski swaps.
For those of you with kids who grow out of their winter equipment waaaaaayyyy too quickly, you already know that the swaps are a great way to pick up some used equipment for a fraction of the cost of new.
New equipment from local vendors are also available too, for those who want to try out some of the latest equipment. In addition, you will find clothing and other miscellaneous winter must haves. Local reps from ski shops and resorts will also be on hand to answer your questions.
Most of the local ski swaps benefit youth sports programs in the area, so not only can you pick up some great deals, but you’re helping the local community as well.
NORTH TAHOE SKI AND SPORTS SWAP in Tahoe City is this Saturday, October 25 at the North Tahoe High School. Hours are from 9am and 3pm. If you have items to sell, bring them on October 24 between the hours of 4 and 9pm. Volunteers get to pre-shop at 7am. Admission is $1
TRUCKEE SKI & SNOWBOARD SWAP – Saturday, November 8th. Hours are 11-4pm at the Truckee Community Center. 8924 Donner Pass Road. Admission is $2. For more information, visit their website: Truckee Donner Parks and Recreation
XC Ski Swap at Tahoe XC – November 14 from 3-9pm. In addition to winter ski equipment, there are snow shoes, kayaks and other outdoor gear to be purchased as well. Visit their website here: Tahoe XC

Last years Lake of the Sky Garden Tour was in Incline Village, Nevada. We wandered through grounds that were everything from modest homes (a relative term for Lake Tahoe, I’ll grant you) to massive, lake front estates. The weather was perfect, the gardens were lovely, and all in all, it made for a very pleasant – and inspiring afternoon.
This year’s 2014 garden tour will take place at the ‘Magical West Shore’ of Lake Tahoe on July 26, 2014. A self guided tour, you can pick up tickets at most local plant nurseries. (Be sure to bring cash or checks. Lake of the Sky does not accept credit or debit cards as payment for this event.) And DO get your tickets early. The yearly Garden Tour always sells out quickly. You most probably will not be able to find a ticket for love or money on the day of the event.

Wear comfy walking shoes, bring water, and a camera. Carpool if you can, as parking is often limited. We found that starting mid morning or later was best, and do plan to take a break for lunch at one of the eateries that dot the west shore of Lake Tahoe. (Sunnyside Resort, Firesign Cafe, Chambers Landing, The West Shore Cafe, along with a few pizza parlors and deli’s. I happen to like the sandwiches at the Tahoma PDQ market.) Most folks start the tour when it opens, and by taking a lunch break, you can miss most of the crowds, as they have wandered off elsewhere by the afternoon. Do hang on to your ticket when you’re done with the tour, as most of the local plant nurseries give special discounts on that day with proof of purchase of the tour.

All proceeds are returned to the community for student scholarships, community education and local beautification and environmental projects.
