A 21 year old tradition starts out with the local school kids decorating the trees that will line Donner Pass Road in Old Downtown at 4pm, with the tree lighting ceremony slated to be at 5:15pm.

With so many fine restaurants in Old Downtown, you’re sure to find a place to warm up and a cold or hot drink to take the chill off. Some stores may be open, although it wasn’t indicated in the article.

Truckee KidZone: A place to play   Leave a comment

_MG_9310-XL

Soon the dust will settle under a fresh dumping of rain, and we will all be happy mountain bikers, hikers and leaf peepers. But then those pesky and lovely children who reside in our mountain homes will look out the window at the steady rain coming down and say, “I’m bored! What are we going to do?” And you, being the brilliant parent you are, know the answer: The Truckee KidZone.

The KidZone Museum is located at 11711 Donner Pass Road. It’s the large white dome between Truckee High School and the Fire Station. At the Museum you will find a hands on museum and a place for young children to play. There is an outdoor nature play center, an Art Studio, indoor play structure and a Scientastic lab where kids can join in on weekly hands-on science activities. A highlight of the KidZone is the Take Flight Tahoe hands-n play exhibit, which comes complete with a plane, from which kids can communicate with the control tower. Once they are finished flying they can go fix stuff in the airplane hanger, before retiring to the hotel and café they will visit while traveling.

All the Museum exhibits are created with the same philosophy in mind, learning through play. Kids have fun, work off excess energy, and learn along the way. In fact, perhaps they will have such a good time at the KidZone, they will want to go there on a sunny day.

Summer hours are Tuesday-Sunday 10:00 am to 1:30 pm. Starting October 15th, winter hours go into effect:  Tuesday-Friday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 am to 1:30 pm. KidZone Museum is also available for parties when closed to the public. Information is available at http://www.kidzonemuseum.org/ or (530) 587-5437.

Big springs gardens

No matter how long I live in the area, I’m always amazed at the new things I stumble upon that I never knew existed. Recently I had the pleasure of discovering a wonderful place to have lunch among well kept gardens and tranquil streams and ponds.

I hidden gem on HWY 49 between Sierraville and Sierra City is Big Springs Gardens. The Sacramento Bee calls it ‘A little Monet in the Mountains”. We had a marvelous buffet lunch and then worked off some of the decadent desserts we couldn’t pass up wandering the trails and admiring their well kept grounds. Definitely a labor of love, the owners have taken great care to create a tranquil environment to go with their well thought out brunch offerings.

Reservations are necessary, as they have only one seating and are closed on Monday and Tuesday. Cash or check only, as they do not accept debit or credit cards. Well worth the restrictions, you can either just tour the gardens for $15 per person, or $35 for the weekday buffet brunch or $39 for the weekend BBQ – and get the gardens thrown in for good measure.

We had a marvelous meal and a most pleasant afternoon. To be sure, this is definitely on my list to return to again in the future.

Call 530-862-1333 for reservations – or visit their website at www.bigspringsgardens.com
