Save our bookstore!   Leave a comment

By Tim Hauserman

The Bookshelf, located next to Wild Cherries in Truckee, is the last remaining full scale bookstore in the Truckee-North Tahoe region. It may disappear at the end of January unless a buyer for the store is found very soon.

Bookshelf owner Debbie Lane says that she had a buyer for the business, but unfortunately it recently fell through. She’s also looked into the concept of putting together a co-op, where a group of people own the store together, but the logistics of such an arrangement has not yet worked out. “It’s very rewarding and I hate to think that there will not be a book store in town. I think it’s important for the kids. We have had great support here,” said Lane. But Lane is ready to retire, her husband is ready to travel and she can’t handle the business by herself. She knows it is time for someone else to take over the reins if the bookstore is to stay in the Tahoe region.

Wondering whether a bookstore might provide an emotionally and intellectually stimulating business for you? Zoe Miller, owner of Grassroots Books in Reno says that “people delightedly tell me that we made a difference in their lives. When we go to parties and meet new people, there’s always someone who raves about their experience at the bookstore which is a great pleasure. Amazing people work at bookstores, and it’s wonderful to hire and work with them.”

The Bookshelf will soon begin the process of selling off the store’s inventory if a buyer doesn’t come along soon.

Local Author Children’s Book – Gertrude’s Tahoe Adventures in Time   Leave a comment

By Michelle Portesi

Our very own contributing writer Tim Hauserman has a new book out. Geared towards children, but designed to be enjoyable for adults as well, ‘Gertrude’s Tahoe Adventures in Time’  is an introduction to the natural history of Lake Tahoe and how it came to be the incredible place we enjoy today.

The book tells the story of Gertrude, a Tahoe girl who meets a magical maiden who takes her on a fast motion adventure through the history of Lake Tahoe. They watch glaciers march, volcanoes erupt and exotic animals graze, all while the two become forever friends.

Illustrated by Jess Bechtelheimer, the book’s artwork is charming, vividly colorful and whimsical…everything you want in a children’s book. It’s obvious that the book is a heartfelt labor of love by both Tim and Jess and was designed to share with everyone this beautiful area we are all so grateful and lucky to call ‘home’.

Both Tim and Jess will be available to sign copies of this wonderful book on the following dates:

August 13, at The Bookshelf in Truckee – 6pm

August 14, at Grassroots Books in Reno – from 10:30am-12:30pm – AND Truckee Thursday from 4-6pm

August 15, at Ruffles and Roughnecks in Tahoe City – from 11am-1pm

August 16, at Sundance Books in Reno – from 3-4:30pm

The book is also available for purchase at The Bookshelf in Truckee, Ruffles and Roughnecks, The Store and The North Lake Tahoe Visitor’s Center in Tahoe City, Tahoe Mountain Sports in Kings Beach, Sundance Books and Grass Roots Books in Reno, or online.
