I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I’ve lived at Donner Lake off and on for years, and I’m just now discovering this hike…literally a mile from my home. That’s what’s so great about living here in the Sierra’s – no matter how long you’ve lived here, there is always something new to discover. Coldstream Canyon is actually considered part of the Donner Memorial State Park, with the entrance road literally hugging the campgrounds.

Located right off the I-80 freeway’s Donner Pass Road/Donner Lake exit on the east end of Donner Lake, go straight from the off ramp and drive to the end of the road, park your car and hike up along the creek. This is also a great area for mountain biking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. The Truckee River Watershed Council has been working diligently to return this area to its original wetlands and has been an active steward of the creek area, as Cold Creek feeds into the Truckee River. It is still a railroad corridor, and there are plans for housing development in the lower section that was once a gravel quarry.
With so little snow last winter, I was surprised to see the creek still flowing with water. About a mile in you’ll reach meadows and marshland. I didn’t hike in as far as I would have liked this foray, but rumor has it that for a true back country experience, you can make your way to Lost Trail Lodge. It’s completely off the grid, but this is no Quonset hut. In the summer there is a jeep road that can take you all the way up if you have a 4 x 4 but you’ll have to park a 1/4 mile away from the lodge if you only have 2 wheel drive. In the winter however, you’ll be snowshoeing, cross country skiing or snowmobiling your way in and out.

Heavy rains just days before this picture was shot caused a landslide further upstream that made for some murky waters running through the creek. Photo by Michelle Portesi
You can read more about the history of Coldstream Canyon and the ongoing projects on the Truckee Watershed website. Be sure to check their calendar for upcoming events. There will be a River Talk this Thursday, August 21 at 8am and another in Tahoe City on August 25.
You can read an overview of the proposed development at Coldstream Canyon at the Tahoe Daily Tribune
For ongoing updates on the Coldstream Canyon Development, you can check in on the Town of Truckee website.

Our very own contributing writer Tim Hauserman has a new book out. Geared towards children, but designed to be enjoyable for adults as well, ‘Gertrude’s Tahoe Adventures in Time’ is an introduction to the natural history of Lake Tahoe and how it came to be the incredible place we enjoy today.
The book tells the story of Gertrude, a Tahoe girl who meets a magical maiden who takes her on a fast motion adventure through the history of Lake Tahoe. They watch glaciers march, volcanoes erupt and exotic animals graze, all while the two become forever friends.

Illustrated by Jess Bechtelheimer, the book’s artwork is charming, vividly colorful and whimsical…everything you want in a children’s book. It’s obvious that the book is a heartfelt labor of love by both Tim and Jess and was designed to share with everyone this beautiful area we are all so grateful and lucky to call ‘home’.

Both Tim and Jess will be available to sign copies of this wonderful book on the following dates:
August 13, at The Bookshelf in Truckee – 6pm
August 14, at Grassroots Books in Reno – from 10:30am-12:30pm – AND Truckee Thursday from 4-6pm
August 15, at Ruffles and Roughnecks in Tahoe City – from 11am-1pm
August 16, at Sundance Books in Reno – from 3-4:30pm
The book is also available for purchase at The Bookshelf in Truckee, Ruffles and Roughnecks, The Store and The North Lake Tahoe Visitor’s Center in Tahoe City, Tahoe Mountain Sports in Kings Beach, Sundance Books and Grass Roots Books in Reno, or online.

I hope you are all enjoying your summer. There is so much to do and see here during our brief but glorious season that we want to make sure you don’t miss a thing. Here on my Lake Tahoe and Truckee Lifestyle blog, I am always trying to improve the site’s usefulness and provide you with timely information.
Toward that end, please note that I have added new sections to the blog:

Photo from Shakespeare Festival Website.
1) ‘Events Calendar’ page. We can’t always do a feature article on ALL of the current happenings on the main page, especially during the summer, (I’ve got real estate to sell!) but I do want to keep you informed. The new page will be updated as we come across events in the area, so do check the page often.

.
2) I’ve added a “Categories’ section on the left hand column to help you find specific information on articles we’ve written . For example, say you’re interested in popular hikes in the area. Those would be under the ‘Summer Recreation’ link. Some items will be under multiple categories and hopefully the information is categorized intuitively. You can also use the ‘Search’ box located right above the categories section.

Truckee, CA
3) I’ve also added a ‘Local Services’ area on the left column. These are people or companies I’ve done business with that offer services that you may need.

Real Estate
4) There is also a page for my current real estate listings. The page includes a brief synopsis of each property, with a link to my website which has more in depth information on those properties.

Tim Hauserman
5) Since I am busy selling real estate, I’ve brought in some help on the blog. I’d like to introduce you to Tim Hauserman and Michelle Portesi. Both have been contributing writers to the blog already, but as I couldn’t possibly keep up with my ‘day job’ and write all these articles and calendar events, I’ve asked them to help me keep the blog updated. Their stories are located below my information on the ‘About’ page.
I hope you will find these changes make for a more pleasurable browsing experience on my blog. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to leave a comment.
