We confess. Living in such a beautiful area, the majority of us tend to forget that there are so many wonderful places that are so nearby, that it’s a mere quick jaunt in the car to savor them. I know I tend to park myself here on the mountain and seldom venture much further than Reno for the quick Trader Joe’s or Costco errand.
Once I do venture out of the area to a nearby hamlet, I kick myself that I don’t do it more often. This year is going to be different, I swear!!!
Towards that end, I invite you to wander an hour west instead of east, and do something more enjoyable than a grocery run. So very near our lovely Lake Tahoe, that it’s downright shameful we don’t go there more often – is Nevada City and Grass Valley. Full of Old Town charm and historic ambiance, they’re like the town of Truckee on steroids.
Every Christmas, both of those towns ramp that charm level up a couple of extra notches. Every Wednesday and Sunday during the holiday season, Nevada City hosts ‘A Victorian Christmas’ and on Friday nights, Grass Valley hosts ‘A Cornish Christmas’. Shops and restaurants are all open, and you can wander the vintage streets, while carolers entertain you.
And don’t forget, there are many other things to do in the area, including several wineries that have tasting rooms and tours.
If you have friends or family in the area who can pick you up, you can take the train from Truckee to Colfax, which is a stunningly breathtaking ride, so you don’t have to battle the winter road conditions yourself.
