The Sawtooth is a trail built for mountain biking just a stone’s throw from the Sierra Meadows neighborhood south of Brockway Drive. I hadn’t ridden it in years when I made the good decision to give it another go recently.
Sawtooth is a ten mile loop trail, which begins just off Forest Service Road 06. This major dirt road is part of the route for The Great Ski Race. If you were to keep following it south, you would eventually hit the Fiberboard Freeway near Watson Peak and Watson Lake. The Fiberboard is a Forest Service Road between Brockway Summit and Tahoe City, from which a host of popular single track trails spins off, including the Tahoe Rim Trail.
The Sawtooth trail is not difficult when it comes to the amount of ups and downs you will encounter, but most riders will find it challenging because of the rocky terrain and the numerous quick, sharp turns. The trick is to keep enough speed to make it over the rocks, while going slow enough to survive the hairpin turns. It’s a fun ride.

Fairly quickly, the trail makes it’s way over to the top of the Truckee River canyon, where a series of ridge top views of the Truckee River and Highway 89 await. Past the views the trail winds through Jeffrey pine and fir forest, with a thick understory of manzanita and ground hugging squaw carpet. You reach the southern most point on the trail at a crossing of FS 06. Now the trail becomes smoother, with fewer rocky sections and you have a chance to step on the pedals and get some speed going. You will also find a few decent climbs to get your heart pumping. The trail eventually hits FS 06 a second time and you are given an option: Cross the road and reconnect with a portion of the trail you have already ridden, back over a mile of rocky terrain to the trailhead, or roar down FS 06 back to your car. The entire loop should take the average rider about an hour and a half.
Trailhead: Drive through Sierra Meadows to Thelin. Follow it to the dirt and then find the trailhead on your right.

This wonderful event will be hosted in the lovely gardens of Truckee this year from 10 am to 4 pm.
I try to make this event every year. Last year’s garden tour was along Lake Tahoe’s Magical West Shore. This was a self guided tour, with viewing of creative landscaping all along Highway 89 south – from expansive lakeshore estates all the way to modest backyard secret gardens…and everything in between!
The gardens always feature creative landscaping, often incorporating decks and patios, meandering streams or lily ponds. At the larger estates, you’ll stumble upon unexpected, quiet little outdoor nooks just perfect for reading a book or wander long pathways of flower beds full of riotous blooms. I guarantee, you’ll go home inspired with a bounty of new ideas for your own yard.

2014 Lake of the Sky Garden Tour. West Shore lakefront garden and patio
This year’s event features 8 gardens as well as landscaping at the Truckee Donner Community Recreation Center, where light refreshments will be served.
Get a group of friends together and make a day of it. It’s best to carpool from house to house. Parking can be limited, and you’ll have much more fun driving together. Plan your route so you aren’t driving back and forth, and DO plan a lunch or snack break in between the gardens at one of Truckee’s many fine restaurants along the way.

Tucked away mid-mountain on the slopes of the Northstar Resort, The Ritz Carlton at Lake Tahoe, might not be on your radar as a place to visit while in Tahoe or Truckee, unless of course you were lucky enough to stay there. But after spending a recent Friday evening enjoy a meal outdoors on the patio, I was reminded that it is well worth the trip. Especially, if like the evening I was there, they were also offering the Tahoe Star Tour with Tony Berendsen.
The large open patio and expansive lawn area on the back of the resort showcases the views of the ski area and nearby mountains as the evening light softens the view. It was a peaceful and quiet setting as we dined on burgers, ribs, pulled pork sandwiches and some of the always comforting baked macaroni and cheese. They also have a heirloom tomato pizza and a smoked peach and prosciutto pizza. And of course you can find whatever you might like to drink.
Once our bellies were full and the night started to darken, a short walk brought us to The Meadows where the star show would begin. Tony is an entertaining guy and provides lots of fascinating information on the cosmos. Once it was truly dark, we were directed over to the humongous telescopes already set up to focus in on Jupiter and Saturn. It was my first chance to glimpse Saturn with it’s tell tale rings, and it was a memorable experience. The star tours happen every Friday until September 4th. For tickets and information go to tahoestartours.com
Two, three and four bedroom suites are available for rent at The Ritz. The photo above was taken from one of the larger units which compares with a luxurious home. Dining is also available at Manzanita, and there is a full spa, two swimming pools and an exercise facility. For information go to ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/LakeTahoe/Information/Default.htm
And don’t forget to check out the calendar of events to see what else is happening this summer at Northstar.
