We often forget, living in such an outdoor recreation intensive environment, that there are ‘Cultural’ events in the area, we just have to dig a little to find them.
Despite being a relatively small museum, in a city that is less than a mega metropolis like L.A., The Nevada Museum of Art in Reno still is host to some very impressive exhibits.

Maxfield Parrish ‘Daybreak’
.
Some years ago I had the pleasure of seeing the works of Maxfield Parrish on display there. (See photo above.) Now I have to admit, the print posters were very popular when I was growing up, and they were all over creation. So needless to say, I was familiar with his work, I just wasn’t ‘wowed’ by it…that is, until I saw them up close and personal. What a difference! It quickly became apparent, standing in front of an original work, that the print versions did not come anywhere near close enough to doing them justice. The colors were so vivid, the scale, massive. What I had originally seen in print form on a greyed out 24 x 36 inch poster was in reality, often painted on an 8 x 12 foot wall or canvas – sometimes larger, sometimes smaller. I stood mesmerized at the sheer beauty of his work, and I’ve been a fan ever since. A large exhibit, we were treated to dozens of exquisite paintings done by the artist I had never seen before. The man was definitely prolific!
So needless to say, when I saw the advertisement for the museums new exhibit, I was very exited. I’ve always loved Toulouse Lautrec, Steinlen, and all the poster artists from that era, so this should prove to be a most memorable exhibit.

Tournée du Chat Noir, c.1896 – Théophile Alexandre Steinlen

If you have never stood before the original famous artworks that have seeped into the collective conscience from their constant use in books, posters, magazines and advertisements, now is the time.
The exhibit runs from Nov. 2, 2013 through January 19, 2014.

Oops! I don’t know about you, but this recent ‘more than a light dusting’ snow storm caught me a bit by surprise. I was still really enjoying the fall colors and wasn’t quite ready for that much white stuff yet. Seeing Jack-O-Lanterns sporting a 6″ snow hat is just plain weird.
It is what it is…but I’m still not ready to change my blog header to a winter scene! Please hold off just a little bit longer Old Man Winter!

However, it did serve to remind me that winter really isn’t that far off, and that means it’s ski swap season. If you have kids who outgrow their equipment faster than you could ever afford to buy it new, or you just need some winter items to knock around with, there are some great bargains to be had.
Below are a list of upcoming ski swaps in the area and links to their websites for more information.

Roughing It
.
Living at the Lake Tahoe basin, you’ll get no argument from me that we’re living in God’s Country. But every once in awhile, you just plain and simply need a little change of pace.
Towards that end, my parents own some property in Graeagle…and by property, I mean just that. Thirty acres of dirt and trees with no house on it. We use it as a sort of family ‘camping ground’. To create our personal, semi permanent yet private outdoor resort, a camper trailer complete with kitchen is hauled in for the season. It sits near more permanent and comfortable ‘fixtures’ on the property, (by which I mean bathroom facilities) of a rather dubious and unorthodox nature, but for which their installation makes for a much more pleasant camping experience. ( Ugh! Who can stomach port-o-potties first thing in the morning? No thank you…)

Graeagle is about one hour from Truckee, and is perfect for a quick get away. The town is small but quaint, complete with golf courses, restaurants, shops and mill pond for swimming. Hiking and horseback riding is never far away, and there are historical sites in the area to explore as well.
This summer I invited some friends from my AAUW group (American Association of University Women) to spend the night at my family’s little hide-away for our monthly gourmet night. Now the main purpose of AAUW is to raise money to help young girls with academic scholarships and educational opportunities (which we do and support); but really – and who are we kidding here? – the gourmet group’s real reason for existence is just an excuse to get together once a month and cook some incredibly diverse and fantastic food, eat, drink and be merry. We just bring money along to donate to ‘the cause’ while we’re at it.

Most of the gals slept in tents strewn around the parameter of the property. We cooked, we drank, we ate, we talked, we sat around the campfire, we ate some more…
And as often happens when there is that much good food and wine around, we never did get around to playing on the campsite’s woodland version of a bocce ball court…although in all fairness, I do believe someone’s cot was straddling the middle of it.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it…
