As a long time resident, I remember when Tahoe House was an actual dinner house restaurant. Somewhere along the line, they decided to make it an awesome coffee house, bakery with a Bavarian flair and specialty market, and it’s been a must stop at, go to place ever since. Recently they’ve spent some time remodeling; updating the facade and making the spot more wheelchair accessible, but it still has the same great coffee, sweets, sandwiches and other various noshes to please every palette. Sporting an offering of specialty wines and their own signature brand of relishes, dressings and sauces in addition to tasty treats from around the world, it’s a great place to find those hard to find gourmet items in addition to grabbing a hearty sandwich to take on your local travels around the lake.

Hang out in the sun in front of the building, grab a seat by the window – and on cold, snowy days, sit on the sofa by the fireplace. Featuring free WiFi, you can check on your email, have a meeting or get some work done on your laptop while you sip a warm cup of joe.
Be sure to get a Sacher Torte to go or the addictive raspberry pockets, among many other goodies.

Tahoe House is located at:
625 West Lake Blvd, Tahoe City, CA

Nothing says summer like the return of the Farmer’s Markets to the Sierra. Sure, the highlight of the Farmer’s Market is an opportunity to find fresh from the farm produce as well as a variety of other food products, but it is also a great social occasion. On a warm summer day, it’s a pleasure to take a stroll past all that food and abundance while chatting with the friends you inevitably run into. Be sure and enjoy these markets this summer:
Tuesday
Truckee Farmers Market 8 am-1 pm
10500 Brockway Road, at the Truckee Regional Park (between Highway 267 and downtown Truckee).
Thursday
Tahoe City Commons Beach 8 am-1 pm
What could be finer then gazing out at the lake while finding your dinner? Over the last few years the market moved to Tahoe Lake School during the busy mid-summer, this year the market will stay at the beach all summer long. Enjoy the view and bring the kids to play.
Incline Village Farmers Market, 4-7 pm,
Lake Tahoe School on Highway 28 near Sierra Nevada College
The market has moved closer to town from it’s previous location at the Tunnel Creek Cafe.
Truckee Thursdays, 5-8 pm, in the midst of the Truckee Thursday festivities in downtown Truckee is a small version of the same market that was in Tahoe City that morning.
Friday
The Sierra Valley Farms Farmers Market 10am to 2 pm
Northern end of Sierra Valley on Highway A-23 near Beckwourth.
This unique market is the only on farm market in California with a series of great food vendors, and frequently a chef’s cooking demonstration.
Sunday
Truckee Community Farmers Market – 10 am – 2 pm
12047 Donner Pass Road, In the parking lot where you find Paco’s and the Coffee Bar, also known as the Outlet Mall. This food and farm only market is a showcase for farmers within 125 miles of Truckee.

Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon, or not at all ~ Harriet Van Horne
.
I’ve completely got the ‘entered into with abandon’ part down. In fact, I’d edit the phrase to wild abandon. I am admittedly a very messy cook. Good. But messy.
Fortunately for me, and other foodies and cooking enthusiasts, there is a veritable two story Mecca for kitchen gadgets, unique entertainment wares and various do-dads close by. Dubbed a toy store for adults, the Cooking Gallery in Old Downtown Truckee is just the place to find every conceivable culinary tool or hard to find gastronomic item. As I belong to a gourmet group, it’s my first – and usually last – go to place to find some tart pan, custard cup or ingredient required by an obscure recipe I’m cooking that can’t be found at the usual suspects (the grocery store).

Downstairs, locals and second homeowners alike, will find the most necessary of appliance and cooking needs for any kitchen. Coffee and espresso machines, Kitchenaid mixers with various attachments, sharp knives and round pie plates. Near the back are gourmet sauces, dressings, spices and specialty baking needs.

Upstairs are beautiful serving and table ware accoutrements, candles, gift ware and linens. Just the finishing touch you’ll need to show off those fabulous meals you spent all day slaving in the kitchen for.
Delight you palate and impress your guests by visiting The Cooking Gallery. They are located on Donner Pass Road in Old Downtown Truckee next to the Truckee Variety Store.
Open 7 days a week.
