With all the rain we’ve had and the continuation of snow melt, now is the time to hike the favorite trails along the local waterfalls before they dry up for the summer.
Just off Highway 89 south at Emerald Bay is the Eagle Falls Trail head. This is a great hike to start getting your summer hiking legs back, as it isn’t a very long hike, nor too overly strenuous. It’s perfect for spring conditions and spectacular photo ops. Dogs love it and older kids should handle it just fine too.
You’ll wander up California State Park made granite stairs that are interspersed with dirt trails as you wind your way up to Eagle Lake, following Eagle Falls the entire way. (I kept thinking of the song ‘Stairway to Heaven’ the whole time we were doing it. Heaven it was…)

The bridge in the distance at Eagle Falls, Lake Tahoe
Turn your view back down the falls to the east, and you will see Emerald Bay, the rest of Lake Tahoe and South Lake Tahoe in the distance. The narrow inlet into Emerald Bay looked so shallow, one might be able to wade across it to the other shore. We’ll have to try that when we do our next hike in the area. It can be accessed from the Rubicon Trail out of DL Bliss State Park, (Go Take A Hike, Part 3 )
… or the hike from the Emerald Bay parking lot down to Vikingsholm. (Future blog post to come on that hike!)

On the Eagle Falls Trail. Emerald Bay and the Rest of Lake Tahoe in the distance.
The Trail splits. Veer to the right and wander up another couple of hundred yards to Eagle Lake. As I recall, the trail doesn’t continue all the way around the rest of the lake …unless you want to bushwack it. It was time for us to turn around anyway, as there was a beer with our name on it waiting for us elsewhere.

Eagle Lake. Video phone camera shot doesn’t do the lake justice!
Another perfect day at Lake Tahoe. Now it’s time for a tasty beverage on the deck at Sunnyside Resort on the way home. I told you there was a beer with our name on it waiting for us! And you sure can’t beat this view!

The Pier at Sugar Pine Point State Park
There are a few places around the lake that are very near and dear to my heart, and Sugar Pine Point is one of them. That’s why I am so pleased to tell you that they are hosting a free locals day on Sunday, May 31st from 10am-3pm, which includes free parking and a free tour of the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion.
If you’ve never done this wonderful tour, it’s a must do for any Tahoe/Truckee local and visitor alike. You will be treated to not only a viewing of the mansions well appointed rooms as they would have been during their heyday, but your very knowledgeable guides will take you on a heady historical journey of the various homes occupants and how they lived. (Think an ‘American Mountain Style’ version of Downton Abbey’…)

Front porch of the Hellman Ehrman Mansion
After you’re done with the tour, sit a spell on the the expansive and shady porch, or peruse the out buildings, including General Phipps Cabin, one of the oldest structures still existing at Lake Tahoe. Wander down to the pier and its inviting white sand beach and crystal aqua waters.
The grounds of the estate is fairly large and includes a nature trail that can take you all the way to the highway and on to General Creek Campground. For more information, visit: www.parks.ca.gov

Strolling minstrels and Renaissance craftsman return to South Lake Tahoe’s Camp Richardson for this annual event. Step back into a bygone era and experience a bit of what life was like in the time of Shakespeare, ladies in waiting, chivalrous knights and let face it, industrious peasants .
The Valhalla Renaissance Faire starts this weekend, Saturday. May 30th and Sunday May 31 and continues next weekend on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 5, 6 and 7.

M’lady from ages past practices her falconry
Fancy a turkey drumstick and an ale while watching a jousting contest? Then this is the event for you! Admire the elaborate Elizabethan era costumes on the Faire’s cast of players as they stroll the grounds, play concerts or sell their wares. Visitors are encouraged to join in on the fashion statements and there is sure to be a frilly frock or jaunty hat for sale in the midst of all the revelry if you don’t happen to already own such vintage attire.
A family friendly event, there are various shows and parades all through the day. The most interesting venues however may be watching how food was prepared and goods were made – by hand – before automated factories came along.

There will be plenty of good eats, merriment and good times while you stroll in the enchanted forest surroundings. Expect to see a wood nymph or two, and who knows, you might even see the Queen!
The festivities start at 10am. $18 for adults, $13 for Seniors, Military and Teenagers (Ages 13-17), $8 for children ages 6-12 and kids under 6 get in FREE!
