Located in the back of the old River Street Inn is the new 1882 Bar and Grill. Thus named because the building was actually built in 1882. (See! The west coast doesn’t tear everything down when it gets old!) Overlooking the Truckee River and a hop, skip and a jump from Old Downtown Truckee, it’s a little bit of New Orleans tucked away in the Sierras.
The menu features Barbecued Brisket, Pulled Pork, Tri Tip, Chicken, Ribs, New York Steak and much more. It’s BBQ served multiple ways and you can have them as an entre, in a salad or on a sandwich. A wide variety of side dishes and appetizers fill the rest of the menu. The restaurant also offers a full bar with some of their own specialty drinks. My friend Joan had the best red beer ever. I could smell the fresh lushness of the bloody Mary mix without even tasting it. (Low salt diet forbids any partaking unfortunately…) We must have inadvertently hit them at happy hour, as drink prices were beyond reasonable for a tourist town. I had their hard cider which was just the refreshing drink I needed to compliment my meal while sitting on the back deck and watching the river roll by.

Fun in the sun or dining by starlight on the deck at 1882 Bar and Grill
I’ve eaten here twice already and it has been a very pleasant experience both times. The food is fresh, delicious and the portions are hearty, which is why we didn’t order the following…
Beignets!!! Let’s get real here. No self respecting homage to New Orleans would be complete without these tasty treats. If you’ve never indulged in these little puffy fluffs of French fritter heaven covered in powdered sugar, you really need to get out more. To remedy that, plan for a lunch or dinner – and dessert! at the 1882 Bar and Grill.

Beignets. Oh the yummyness!

Tucked away mid-mountain on the slopes of the Northstar Resort, The Ritz Carlton at Lake Tahoe, might not be on your radar as a place to visit while in Tahoe or Truckee, unless of course you were lucky enough to stay there. But after spending a recent Friday evening enjoy a meal outdoors on the patio, I was reminded that it is well worth the trip. Especially, if like the evening I was there, they were also offering the Tahoe Star Tour with Tony Berendsen.
The large open patio and expansive lawn area on the back of the resort showcases the views of the ski area and nearby mountains as the evening light softens the view. It was a peaceful and quiet setting as we dined on burgers, ribs, pulled pork sandwiches and some of the always comforting baked macaroni and cheese. They also have a heirloom tomato pizza and a smoked peach and prosciutto pizza. And of course you can find whatever you might like to drink.
Once our bellies were full and the night started to darken, a short walk brought us to The Meadows where the star show would begin. Tony is an entertaining guy and provides lots of fascinating information on the cosmos. Once it was truly dark, we were directed over to the humongous telescopes already set up to focus in on Jupiter and Saturn. It was my first chance to glimpse Saturn with it’s tell tale rings, and it was a memorable experience. The star tours happen every Friday until September 4th. For tickets and information go to tahoestartours.com
Two, three and four bedroom suites are available for rent at The Ritz. The photo above was taken from one of the larger units which compares with a luxurious home. Dining is also available at Manzanita, and there is a full spa, two swimming pools and an exercise facility. For information go to ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/LakeTahoe/Information/Default.htm
And don’t forget to check out the calendar of events to see what else is happening this summer at Northstar.

Donner Lake Kitchen
Whether I’ve lived in a small town or a large city, I’ve always been enamored of the idea of just being able to walk someplace for breakfast. Fortunately for me, that desire is fulfilled, as a block down the street is the re-established Donner Lake Kitchen.
I’ve eaten at the original version of the restaurant, continued to dine at the new reincarnation when it became the Old Hwy 40 Kitchen and Grill, and back again to the Original Donner Lake Kitchen owned by Kelley and Bill Money. I won’t re-create the wheel here by writing about how all of this came about, as The Sierra Sun has already published an excellent article on the whole journey. To read more about it, go here:

Grab a seat by a sunny window
What I will say, is that the food has always been excellent, the portions HUGE, and the prices reasonable…for a resort town anyway. While the fare at The Old Hwy. 40 version was tasty, their menu was fairly limited. I suspect as a result, the restaurant suffered from not being able to attract that much needed local population when the tourists had all gone home.
That’s not the case with the Donner Lake Kitchen. The menu is expansive, they serve breakfast all day, and as far as owner Kelley is concerned, should you want something special that isn’t on the menu, if they have the items on hand to make it – within reason, a little deviation from the norm is just fine by her. From what I’ve seen, the locals have welcomed them back with open arms, and they seem to attract a fairly steady stream of patrons.

Cinnamon Rolls! Ooey, Gooey, Chewy Goodness!
I’ve had both breakfast and lunch here, met with friends for a lively meal, or just relished a quiet breakfast alone at the counter, newspaper or magazine in one hand, coffee in the other. The atmosphere is Funky Tahoe Casual, the service friendly and the food, always fresh and good.
The Donner Lake Kitchen is located at 13710 Donner Pass Road – behind Sticks Market.
