The Excellence in Education Foundation in Truckee has announced the 2015 Skiing For Schools program. Throughout the winter various ski resorts provide hefty discounts with the money going to support the programs of Excellence in Ed. Ski areas participating include Homewood, Tahoe Donner, Sugar Bowl, Tahoe Cross Country, Northstar, Royal Gorge, Tahoe Donner Cross Country, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. Most of the resorts are providing downhill ski tickets for just $40, and cross-country tickets for only $15. For more information on which dates each ski area is participating, and where you can purchase the tickets, go to exined.org
Like Dining for Schools and Golfing for Schools, Skiing for Schools comes about because of the generosity of the local business community who give away discounted tickets, and the public who buys those tickets. It provides skiers with the opportunity to have some fun while doing something good.
Over the past 25 years the Excellence in Education Foundation has provided over $2.7 million in grants to classes and programs at our local schools. Just last year, they provided over $300,000 in grants. Teachers and schools compete for grants based on merit, with awards going to those classrooms and programs where they can provide the most hands on assistance to kids.
Executive Director Laura Brown says that “most grants are for classroom enhancements.” Items like books, science equipment, and musical instruments. Funding the stuff that is needed in the classroom, but just not available in the ordinary school budget. The foundation also partnered with the school district to get Chrome books into the hands of every student between 8-12th grade.
Brown says that the grant process is competitive. All grants, are reviewed by a site administrator and a site council of local citizens, who rank the grants. Then they go to the EIE’s grant committee, where Brown says, “we try very hard to award as many as we can.”
So enjoy a day of skiing and feel doubly good about it.

There is a special kind of wonderful that happens during the holidays at Lake Tahoe and Truckee. Mother Nature has cooperated with some snowfall to get the ski areas open, and all around the basin, fun festivities are planned to get you into that ‘Old Christmas Spirit’.
Noel Nights at Northstar
Northstar is hosting ‘Noel Nights’ on every Thursday leading up to Christmas. In the village from 5-9pm you can hear the songs of the season from the Great Basin Carolers, take a ride on a one horse sleigh, roast chestnuts on an open fire, and participate in cupcake and cookie decorating, among many other treats. Wander the shops in the village or take a turn on the ice rink. For more information on special events for each date, visit Northstar’s Website.
Squaw Valley’s Ice Rink at High Camp
As of December 4th, Squaw Valley opened up their ice rink at high camp. Located at 8200 feet with a view of Lake Tahoe at one end and a grand view of Granite Chief at the other, Squaw’s outdoor venue is the only Olympic sized ice rink in hundreds of miles in every direction. If the sun is cooperating and the weather is kind, you’ll glide under the canopy of brilliant blue skies surrounded by crystalline white peaks of snow. It’s a truly glorious and one of a kind experience for anyone whose only skating opportunities have been in crowded city rinks housed in the usual warehouse-like tin cans. Visit Squaw Valley’s Website for more information.

Starting December 1st and going through December 18, Truckee Community Christmas will be collecting food, coats and toys for financially struggling families in the area.
Look for our collection barrels throughout the community with our signature red square logo for food donations. (Safeway is always a safe bet, and they have pre-made holiday bags of food you can purchase for your donation.)
Coats will be collected by The Church of the Mountains UMC in downtown Truckee and Sierra Bible Church on Brockway Road.

This is truly a ‘Community’ Christmas, as all donations will go to local families in need. In addition, we always need and welcome local volunteers. We could use the following help:
* Collecting boxes
* Asking for donations at the stores – this is where I need the most help
* Moving food from stores and various businesses to storage – flexible times
* Sorting food
* Delivering boxes to the old middle school on December 19th
