I’ll follow the sun.   Leave a comment

The Sierra is a beautiful place all year round, but the period between the end of ski season and the beginning of summer can be a challenging period for outdoor recreationists: It is not very Goldilocks. In general there is not enough snow to ski, but too much for hiking and biking. But don’t get discouraged, all you need to do to enjoy this time of year is follow the sun…no, not to Southern California, but to the places where the snow melts the fastest. Here are a few Tahoe area spring time snow melting rules to keep in mind:

-It snows more on the west side of the Sierra, and Lake Tahoe, than the east side.

-South and west facing slopes melt faster then north and east facing slopes.

-Open areas melt faster than forested areas.

-Lower elevations get less snow and warmer temperatures, so the snow melts fastest.

So what does all this mean for your outdoor recreation plans?

The low lying areas around Truckee are one of the first places available to find dirt-For mountain biking, think the Emigrant Trail from Highway 89 to Stampede Reservoir and the dirt roads around Prosser, Boca and Stampede Reservoirs.

The south facing, lake level elevation Emerald Bay-Rubicon Trail is a great early season hike…especially since while the bay is as beautiful as ever, the hordes of summer tourists are absent. Enjoy.

Once you have ridden the Emigrant Trail and hiked to Emerald Bay, go to the east shore portions of the Tahoe Rim Trail. From Spooner Summit you might be able to hike south to South Camp Peak by early May, or north to Snow Valley Peak. Both give you spectacular views of Lake Tahoe (and one heck of a workout).

The absence of crowds in the spring also makes it a great time to hit the pavement for some road biking. Always wanted to ride around Lake Tahoe, but never quite got around to it?  Find a sunny mid-week day and go at it. Interested in a kayak trip on Donner Lake or Lake Tahoe? In the spring, the motorboats are absent. So pick a glassy day and you just might have the lake to yourself.

ImageIf you are coming up, and are interested in looking at property, the spring is a great time to look. Just give me a call and I can make all the arrangements. And if you are considering selling, remember that as the crowds increase, so do the number of listings on the market…beat the rush and the market by getting your home listed first.

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency says, “Do whatever you want”   Leave a comment

TRPA today formerly abolished all of their land use restrictions and will now focus only on providing assistance to homeowners with BMP’s and erosion control measures. At a press conference today in Tahoe City, TRPA Executive Director Joanne Marchetta said, “We have decided to quit hassling the landowners of the Tahoe basin. We figure it’s their land, they have a better idea what to do with it then we do.” Immediately after the press conference, a member of Tahoe Area Sierra Club, was rushed to the hospital after screaming something unintelligible and then fainting.

In other news…

Gorgeous Powder Day…Tahoe skiers…say “Nah” think I will go to Reno for the day.

With three feet of fresh powder yesterday, followed by blue bird skies this morning, the slopes of Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley were nearly devoid of skiers today.  “It was pretty surprising to see the parking lot nearly empty,” said Squaw Valley Marketing VP Julie Maurer. “Although I have heard that there is a special on those Dark Chocolate Truffle Bars at Trader Joe’s in Reno…perhaps that is where everybody is.” In fact, Whole Foods Checker Ginger Granola said, “I was surprised to see all these Tahoe skiers down here picking up peanut butter packets and Luna bars. I thought it was a powder day.”

In Incline, when asked why she was leaving the bowling alley instead of skiing, Meghan Dudette said, “We’ve already had two good powder days this season…I’m so over it, bowling was the place to be today. And I just love those really cool shoes.”

Have a wonderful April Fool’s Day!

And then it snowed…and they were very happy!   1 comment

You should have seen us last week when the big storm came in and instead of the much needed snow, we got buckets of the dreaded four letter word that starts with an R. Finally, once a good soaking rain had passed through, we did manage to gather in about 5 inches of snow, but the conversation in town was all about that lost moisture that should be frozen up on the hill.

Then a few days later it finally happened. A foot of wet snow at lake level, with a good deal more higher up. Enough snow to liven things up at the downhill ski areas, actually open the cross-country ski areas for the first time this season, and hopefully turn this into a real winter. We need a lot more, but finally near the end of January it’s a good start. And we are very happy.

So assuming winter has finally begun, what do you say we actually make plans for doing some winter type activities?
