Technically, it’s really not Fall yet, but here in the Lake Tahoe basin, what that definition has come to mean is the end of the busy summer season, most of the tourists have gone home and everyone’s kids are back in school. As we cruise into the ‘shoulder season’, that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to do and see. On the contrary. One look at our calendar of events reveals that there is still plenty of fun to be had in September rolling into October.  yourfriendinhighplaces.wordpress.com/events-calendar

While the temperatures will most likely stay warm and sunny for a bit longer, there is no doubt there is an evening and early morning nip in the air. If you’ve never visited the area after the summer ends, you’ll discover happily that Fall is glorious here.

Now is the time to go on those hiking and bike trails that were so overly crowded during the summer.  But beware. We’ve been known to get a few inches of snow the day after Labor Day and onward!  While it usually doesn’t stick around for long, plan for layers of clothing as Mother Nature sorts herself out during the transition. Be sure to bring your camera along too. The leaves may turn in September or October (depending on the temperatures) and you wouldn’t want to miss the Fall show.

Our Calendar of Events have a well rounded list of things to do and see, but there are a few special events we  would like to make sure you don’t miss:

#1 –  The Nevada Museum of Art’s new exhibit ‘TAHOE, A Visual History’.  I just saw this exhibit Friday, and I can tell you, it is nothing short of fascinating. It amassed almost 2 centuries of art, spanning from when Fremont  first viewed the lake to present day. You are sure to learn an even more in depth history of Lake Tahoe and the Donner Lake area that you never knew existed. Featuring art from Ansel Adams, Currier and Ives and Frank Lloyd Wright among many, many others. it’s a visual history of the area that has no doubt never been seen before in one place. As I walked through the exhibits, I was captured by the thought of what it must take to gather so many varied pieces of art from private collectors, other museums and state and national archives throughout the country. It is truly an impressive achievement. The exhibit runs through January 19, 2016. Visit www.nevadaart.org for more information. Don’t miss it!

Spawning Kokanee Salmon at Taylor Creek

Spawning Kokanee Salmon at Taylor Creek

#5 – Fall Fish Festival – October 3-4 at U.S. Forest Service Visitor’s Center at Taylor Creek, South Lake Tahoe.  Plenty of family friendly fun and educational activities are presented by the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service, but the real show is watching the Kokanee Salmon run as they make their way from Lake Tahoe up Taylor Creek to spawn. Walk the gentle pathways of this beautifully peaceful area or take a ride along the bike trail. Another Octoberfest celebration will be going on at Camp Richardson’s Tallac Historic site right next door for food and refreshments. Just follow the trail between the two. And watch out for bears…

Obviously, we’re all about the food here, so be sure to work some of those calories off with a hike, a bike ride or some paddle boarding in our glorious mountain community.  Be sure to check in on the Events Calendar from time to time, as new Events and Announcements will be added as the information becomes available.

Annual Lake of the Sky Garden Club Tour – July 25, 2015   Leave a comment

By Michelle Portesi

This wonderful event will be hosted in the lovely gardens of Truckee this year from 10 am to 4 pm.

I try to make this event every year. Last year’s garden tour was along Lake Tahoe’s Magical West Shore. This was a self guided tour, with viewing of creative landscaping all along Highway 89 south –  from expansive lakeshore estates all the way to modest backyard secret gardens…and everything in between!

The gardens always feature creative landscaping, often incorporating decks and patios, meandering streams or lily ponds.  At the larger estates, you’ll stumble upon unexpected, quiet little outdoor nooks just perfect for reading a book or wander long pathways of flower beds full of riotous blooms. I guarantee, you’ll go home inspired with a bounty of new ideas for your own yard.

This year’s event features 8 gardens as well as landscaping at the Truckee Donner Community Recreation Center, where light refreshments will be served.

Get a group of friends together and make a day of it. It’s best to carpool from house to house. Parking can be limited, and you’ll have much more fun driving together. Plan your route so you aren’t driving back and forth, and DO plan a lunch or snack break in between the gardens at one of Truckee’s many fine restaurants along the way.

The 2015 Season of Shakespeare at Sand Harbor – July 10 through August 23   Leave a comment

By Michelle Portesi

Shakespeare at Sand Harbor has been a much looked forward to summer event for what seems like forever. Locals have been long familiar with the fun, food and entertainment that is part and parcel of this yearly month long theater extravaganza. If you’re a visitor or a new resident, this may be all new to you – and you’re in for a real treat!

LTSF-Venue-11

From Shakespeare at Sand Harbor website

Located on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe at Sand Harbor State Park, the venue is a natural amphitheater – albeit one with sand under your feet instead of concrete. You’ll view the stage while overlooking the lake’s light sandy beach and crystal clear aqua waters, making this one of the most magical spots at Lake Tahoe to spend a summer evening of entertainment.

This year’s Shakespeare play is Romeo and Juliet. You’ll be swept away to another place and time, although what is truly fun about the theater groups interpretation of Shakespeare’s plays, is that the time is not necessarily of the Elizabethan era.

Also, much to our enjoyment, the festival has added much more to the nightly entertainments than just Shakespeare’s plays. Looking for something with a little less drama? This year, The Fantastics, the World’s longest running musical, has been added to the playbill. On Mondays, which is the theater group’s night off, there are a variety of other entertainments as well. Among some of the shows will be the Ballet version of Romeo and Juliet (I saw Giselle a few years back, and it was wonderful!)

The well respected Reno Philharmonic will also be performing two separate shows: ‘Broadway on the Beach’ and ‘Beatles on the Beach’. (I’m down for those two!  Who’s coming with me?!!!)

There are many different seating options, some including dining service, so do go to their website for more information. There is great food and drink available at the venue too, but as us long time viewers know, packing a picnic basket full of good eats to go with your good friends and good wine is half the fun!
