Eagle rock: a lot of bang for a little hike   Leave a comment

About five miles south of Tahoe City, just off Highway 89, sits Eagle Rock. Located just a stone’s throw from Blackwood Creek at the bottom of Blackwood Canyon folks have been congregating on the top of this rock for hundreds of years for a few simple reasons: it’s sits 200 feet above, yet very close to, Lake Tahoe; provides 360 degree panoramic views of the lake and Blackwood Canyon; and is easily accessible via a trail of less then a half mile. If you have a free hour, you can hike to the top, hang around and take a few photos and head back down with plenty of time to spare.

There are two trails to the top. One on the north side, and a newer trail constructed just to the south of the rock. Find parking along the road, or in a small dirt parking area on the south side. Both trails are well constructed and not very difficult. At the top, wonder around on the large gently sloped volcanic plug. You can catch views up Blackwood Canyon to the Sierra Crest and Twin Peaks, and then walk a bit further and capture incredible vistas of much of Lake Tahoe. The eastern edge of the rock, just above the highway, provides the most stunning lake views.

While this hike can be done quickly, bring a lunch and a good book, and you could have yourself a lovely and peaceful afternoon. Enjoy.

Lake Tahoe’s Taylor Creek Fall Fish Festival 2014   2 comments

Last Year’s Fall Fish Festival was cancelled due to the government shutdown. Wouldn’t you know, Taylor Creek Visitor’s Center is one of the few National Parks in the Tahoe basin, as most are state run. But this year it’s on for this weekend October 4th and 5th from 10am until 4pm.  The visitor center will play host to a full day of family fun sure to be both entertaining and informative. If you’ve never been there, do be sure to go to the river viewing chamber where you can watch what goes on under the water of a river bed.  Fall is the best time to walk along the lovely trails that follow the river as the area is laden with aspens. Watch out for bears though, as fall is the time they engorge themselves on the spawning salmon in the creek as they fatten up for their winter hibernation.

Right next door is the Historic Baldwin Estate. While the tours through the old mansion have ended for the season, the grounds are still open for wandering. It’s one of the most peaceful and beautiful areas when you have it all to meander by yourself.

Lake Tahoe and Truckee abound in bike trails, perfect for a ride or a leisurely stroll.

If a bike ride is more in your plans, there is a wonderful bike trail that follows that entire area of South Lake Tahoe’s  Historic Area. Camp Richardson is just down the road a piece, and will also be hosting its Octoberfest celebration this weekend as well. And a bike may be the best way to get around all of what’s going on there this weekend, as parking for your car can be a bit dicey with so many events in the area. If you do drive, plan to come early.

Legacy Trail connects Downtown Truckee and Glenshire   Leave a comment

With the recent completion of the Legacy Trail between downtown Truckee and Glenshire, a great new avenue of access to the Truckee River has been created, and bikers and walkers in Glenshire will now have the opportunity for a safe and fun route into town.

From downtown Truckee, The Legacy Trail begins at the Truckee River Regional Park, or you can meet the trail by riding to the end of East River Street, and taking the bike bridge across the river. Either way, follow the river downstream as the trail gently twists and turns under the Bypass bridge, past the Truckee Riverview Sports Park, and through an open forest of pines. While the riding is smooth, it’s also a popular trail for dog walkers and stroller pushers so keep your speed under control.

Soon enough, you reach the recently opened section of trail, and marvel at the substantial rock wall that has been built to enable the trail to stay close to the Truckee River. You then pass through an open meadowy area to a bridge across Martis Creek. Opportunities abound to take a break and enjoy the sound of the river at one of the many benches along the trail. Finally, via a series of long, sweeping switchbacks through a humongous pile of basalt tailings, you climb up to the edge of Glenshire. Enjoy sweeping views of the Truckee River and the Sierra Crest before reaching trails end at the entrance to the Glenshire development.

In addition to providing new access to downtown Truckee for Glenshire residents, the Legacy Trail gives Tahoe/Truckee bike riders another connection and opportunity for a longer ride. I left my house in Tahoe City and rode to the entrance to Glenshire in just over an hour (it took longer on the return because of a headwind and a few hundred feet of additional climbing). Except for the narrow shouldered section along West River Street, which is hopefully slated for improvement in the next few years, the whole ride was on bike trail or wide bike lane. Each year, new trails and improvements get added to the network of Truckee/Tahoe trails, and there are a lot of bikers that can’t wait to take advantage of these new opportunities.
