One of my favorite events on the summer calendar every year is the Tour De Manure metric century ride, this year set for June 18th in Sierraville. The 62 mile ride passes through spectacularly beautiful farm country with wildflowers and a plethora of birds. And the company is awesome, a great group of Tahoe and Truckee riders who get to enjoy a day in the relaxing farm country of the Sierra Valley. After the ride, the fun continues with great food and music.
The ride:
Starting in Sierraville (25 miles north of Truckee on Highway 89) you head north on Highway 89/49 to Sattley, where a right turn begins the long pull across the Sierra Valley on A-23. The roads are straight and flat, and lightly traveled, making perfect conditions for large groups of riders to peloton across the valley. At Highway 70 in Beckwourth, a right turn brings you to A-24 which winds back across the wide open rangeland to Loyalton. Here, the first real hill is added with an out and back jaunt on Smithneck Road. The final leg is back to Sierraville along Highway 49, with plenty of awesome views and birds to help you complete the circle. Hopefully you get here before the notorious Sierra Valley afternoon winds add an extra level of spice to the event.
The volunteers:
As Doug Read, one of the organizers says, “It’s a bunch of firefighters who never get on bikes putting on a century ride for people who do.” And yes, it is a great bunch of firefighters who volunteer to make the event a success, but it is also a joint effort of much of the town of Sierraville, as the event is the major fundraiser for the local fire department. The volunteers give the event a happy small town feel that can’t be beat.

The food and music
Tri tip and chicken, pasta and salad, and plenty of desserts. And beer of course. You’ve built up an appetite, they will take care of it. While eating you can listen to Tahoe and Sierra Valley resident Michael Hogan and The Simpletones play country and blue grass until the cows come home, or you are ready for a nap.

Memorial Day has just recently passed as I write this, and the 2016 summer season has officially begun. Along with the plethora of hiking, biking and beaching the area is known for during our short but glorious summer months, it’s also this time of year that the area veritably explodes with concerts and cultural events galore.
And what better time than now to make plans for attending the yearly TOCCATA music series in and around Lake Tahoe. Featuring the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, this year’s listening pleasures includes everything from Baroque, Broadway to Pops and a few other surprises as well. With so many venues to choose from, you’ll be sure to find a place and time to fit into your schedule!

Nothing says summer like the return of the Farmer’s Markets to the Sierra. Sure, the highlight of the Farmer’s Market is an opportunity to find fresh from the farm produce as well as a variety of other food products, but it is also a great social occasion. On a warm summer day, it’s a pleasure to take a stroll past all that food and abundance while chatting with the friends you inevitably run into. Be sure and enjoy these markets this summer:
Tuesday
Truckee Farmers Market 8 am-1 pm
10500 Brockway Road, at the Truckee Regional Park (between Highway 267 and downtown Truckee).
Thursday
Tahoe City Commons Beach 8 am-1 pm
What could be finer then gazing out at the lake while finding your dinner? Over the last few years the market moved to Tahoe Lake School during the busy mid-summer, this year the market will stay at the beach all summer long. Enjoy the view and bring the kids to play.
Incline Village Farmers Market, 4-7 pm,
Lake Tahoe School on Highway 28 near Sierra Nevada College
The market has moved closer to town from it’s previous location at the Tunnel Creek Cafe.
Truckee Thursdays, 5-8 pm, in the midst of the Truckee Thursday festivities in downtown Truckee is a small version of the same market that was in Tahoe City that morning.
Friday
The Sierra Valley Farms Farmers Market 10am to 2 pm
Northern end of Sierra Valley on Highway A-23 near Beckwourth.
This unique market is the only on farm market in California with a series of great food vendors, and frequently a chef’s cooking demonstration.
Sunday
Truckee Community Farmers Market – 10 am – 2 pm
12047 Donner Pass Road, In the parking lot where you find Paco’s and the Coffee Bar, also known as the Outlet Mall. This food and farm only market is a showcase for farmers within 125 miles of Truckee.
